Unravel Me

custard pie & silk road

2005-09-19
what a fun, whirlwind weekend! i visited my parents, and my sister visited. hers was a surprise visit, so that made me extra happy. good times were plentiful. we went out for pancakes on saturday morning. we had a backyard cookout/bbq. even though it's fall now, it's quite warm during the day, so grilling season hasn't gone away just yet. who said you can't enjoy corn on the cob just b/c summer is waning?!

i also baked my 3rd lattice-top pie this year! this one was a combination raspberry-blackberry pie. if you've never smelled a fresh berry pie baking in your oven, much less tasted one, you're missing out! to my delight, it turned out well. lately, i've been obsessed with making the perfect pie crust, and i've decided to keep practicing. practice makes perfect. waitno--it's pompous to say "perfect", so i'll just say this latest pie was my best yet, b/c i'm finally mastering the art of prettying up the edges of the crust. i think i've come a long way since making my 1st piea peach double-crusted onewhen i was 23. up next: an apple pie for fall, either double-crusted or crumb-topped. that will be followed by my initiation into the art of making a pumpkin or other custard-filled pie near thanksgiving. for now, i guess i'm a "custard pie virgin"! ha.

switching gears, i'm SO. BUMMED! right before i left for vacation in july, it was announced that Yo Yo Ma was coming here this winter to perform at the historic downtown Paramount Theater & Performing Arts Center. he's slated to perform on friday february 26th 2006 w/ the Silk Road Ensemble andit's SOLD OUT! already! tickets went on sale in mid-august and sold out pretty much immediately. little did i know tickets for yo yo ma would sell out as fast as the ones for the Rolling Stones' tour--did i mention the stones are playing here (at UVA) on october 6th? and the Pixies are also coming? anyway, i'd been dying to go see a show at the newly renovated/re-opened Paramount Theater/performing arts center. it would have been a truly memorable evening, and i'd planned to invite my parents to town to see him. but alas, there's no silk road ahead. you have no idea how crushed i am. but, another time, another place, i guess.

PS: speaking of timing, i'm still pondering the age-gap thing (last entry). in any case, it's always a little bit flattering to discover you have a new admirer!
