good girl, dumb jocks and unwanted pregnancies

good girl, dumb jocks and unwanted pregnancies...

like a good girl, i went and voted today. my reward was a cool, glossy, "I VOTED" sticker. this is my fourth presidential election, my first vote having been cast by absentee ballot in 1992, when i was away at school.

now, i *could* write a lengthy entry about the imperfections of the electoral system, and how the "winner take all" system seems un-american b/c some voices don't get heard when the popular vote isn't what matters. (why, yes, in fact, i wrote a paper on the problems with our electoral vote system for my 12th grade AP-government class in high school). i could voice frustration at being a "blue girl" in what is projected to be a "red state". i could also express puzzlement that almost everyone i personally associate with seems to hold similar views as my own and thus, i'm stumped that our state leans republican. and then i realize that i live in a university town, and such towns typically tend to lean left/liberal and don't necessarily reflect the views of other areas within the state. (which is probably one reason i've always enjoyed the unique, intellectual climate of living in a university town). BUT, i won't go any further with that.

instead, i'll tell you that i have a clear conscience that, like a good citizen should, i exercised my american-as-apple-pie right-to-vote. so now, all i can do is wait, watch the election returns this evening, hope it's over in the next day, and hope that the prediction i put forth over the weekend proves right. granted, it's mere legend. and yes, i realize it's based on football. if it holds up *{crossed fingers}*, those washington redskins will have the last laugh: (who you callin' "dumb jocks")?! if not, well then "dumb jocks" they shall remain.

whatever happens, please don't let this election drag on 'til january. the world cannot take any more "pregnant chads". our country has enough unwanted and unplanned pregnancies as it is.
