dinner, drinks, scrabble & scrabble ethics

dinner, drinks, scrabble & scrabble ethics...

on saturday after the arthritis walk, i came home, showered, and rested some before going back out to meet up with a grad school friend, cindy, and her new housemate, daisy. we met up for dinner and drinks at the biltmore. since the weather was nice, we ate on the outdoor terrace. i hadn't seen cindy in forever so it was great to catch up on each others' lives. daisy was charismatic and fun. she's the new dean of students at the university, and b/c she's young and connects well w/ students, she's earned the nickname "dean daisy" from them. how cute is that?

afterwards, we went over to myrna's new house for drinks, dessert, and an evening of scrabble. i also know myrna from grad school but hadn't seen her since finishing the program, as she graduated the following year. we were joined by tom, another grad school classmate i hadn't seen since graduation. it was fun to reconnect w/ everyone, and now we're even thinking of having a regular drinks and scrabble/card game night. cindy will teach us how to play euchre, and daisy will teach everyone risk. (i'm not sure what card tricks i have up my sleeve to share, but oh well...)

this brings me to my last point: "scrabble ethics". it seems that someone (not me, but no names named!) won scrabble with the word "biz". another person objected (w/ humor, of course!) that it's an abbreviation and not valid. out came the Webster's dictionary, where "biz" is listed as a word meaning "business" with no reference to it being an abbreviation. okay. so maybe it's technically valid. or maybe it's a judgment call. but... if you saw words like "biz" for "business", "ed" for "education", or the infamous "carb", for "carbohydrate" on a scrabble board in your own living room, how would you call the shots? is it a true scrabble win? or would this be contested as badly as bush-gore in 2000?

ok, take a stand on this one and bring on the ethics, lovely readers! does "biz" constitute a bush win or a gore win?

PS: {i spent sunday basking in the happiness of having had such a great saturday. i also spent the day recovering from sat and getting ready for this full week}.
