grunge

this week, everyone is talking about the 10th anniversary of kurt cobain's death. has it really been ten years? i remember when the news broke: i was finishing up my sophomore year at mt. holyoke.

i want to say that i kind of slept in that morning--which must mean it was a friday. (as a humanities major, i remember smugly enjoying the luxury of not having fri. classes, while all my science major friends had to roll out of bed by 9 for lecture). lying in bed half-awake, i heard my alarm clock radio relaying the news via the hartford's 96.5 WTIC-FM. i think that's the only radio station that came in clearly on my alarm radio.

i feel old thinking about it...not so much because i can clearly remember events from a decade ago. but rather, last week i watched that dateline tv special on kurt cobain, and looking at photos and footage of him, it suddenly hit me how young he looked. he was only 27, and now that i've passed that age, it's kind of weird being able to look at the picture of someone who was seven years older than i am, and be like "man, he looks so young there". weird. but i guess that's what happens when someone young dies. it's like jfk, jr, etched into the public's head as the perennial boy.

how long ago it all seems, now. chances are quite high that at the time, i had a nirvana cd in my stereo and i incorporated elements of the grunge look into my style, complete with flannel shirt, big black doc martens, and a backwards baseball cap. (but i did bathe and wash my hair, thank you very much!)
