Unravel Me

haha! i've got you all figured out, snoopy!

hey-where are you reading this from right now? ....HMMMM????? might you be at, oh, maybe... work?

nah, i'm not guilt tripping anyone. sometimes everyone seems to update their journal from their workplace. thinking about the "blog-at-my-office" phenomenon takes me back to this entry from last spring. i must say it can be so tempting to blog and read other blogs when you're sitting at your computer all day. but given how easy technology makes it for big brother to watch, i do think twice.

with good reason. i'm fairly computer literate and savvy, but not a tech geek. but... i've figured out something and shhhh! i'll share the little secret with you. have you ever wondered whether or not your employer is spying on your computer usage?

keep an eye out for various programs installed on your work computer. one such program is VNC Client. it can be used for diagnostics and repairs from afar, but can also be used to spy on and control a remote computer's every move. when i set up my office computer--an XP--i noticed in the start menu that this program was installed. what caught my eye was the word "snoopy" next to it. the red flags went up, so i sleuthed around the internet to learn more about VNC, and i think i can safely say i won't be blogging from my office. no sireee! not me.

i know there are spyware removal programs, but if i tried to fiddle with that, i can just picture my computer suddenly freezing up or someone from the IT dept mysteriously showing up at my door within minutes.

so now maybe you're thinking "wow, what an oppressive environment you must work in!" but it's no surprise to me, considering the type of job i'm in. we do extensive electronic client case management, plus it's extra secure because we have to be HIPAA-compliant and are also governed by the ethical/legal concepts of confidentiality and privileged communication.

hence i'm mainly doing evening updates. blogging could also become a weekend past-time. or maybe it already was. speaking of weekends, no work tomorrow! i have a four day weekend!

and i'm outta here...
