Unravel Me

a night owl & the controversial trio of lee, jackson & king

2005-01-13
it's perfect that my long (4-day) weekend starts tonight! i've been busy and sleep-deprived. so why the FOUR-day weekend? well, see, tomorrow is a state holiday called "Lee-Jackson Day". it honors two of the south's top civil war generals from around here: Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson. remember those confederate guys from your U.S. history class? (yeah... THEM). and then, of course, monday is "Martin Luther King, Jr. Day". i guess a perk of living south of the mason-dixon line is getting a long weekend in january, right?

but seriously, as one can imagine, the holiday is controversial. it used to be on the same day as MLK day, and was coined "Lee Jackson King Day", but some groups disapproved of the combined holiday. so several years ago, the governor separated them. he declared that King deserved his own holiday, but so, too, did the confederate heros, Lee & Jackson. it placated some people, but incensed others who want to scrap Lee-Jackson Day b/c it's inherently confederate (and therefore, implies racism).. i'll only venture to say that combining Lee Jackson & King into one, or calling it "Lee Jackson Day" over "MLK Day" was obnoxious. yeah, THAT was definitely wrong. but otherwise, i'll stay out of the debate and just be happy to rest, relax, hang w/ friends, & catch up on sleep from tomorrow through monday.

anyone up for a movie? lunch? or how 'bout board games? and drinks? yes? alright then.
