Unravel Me

no time for chatter now, but hear my feet go pitter-patter...

11:55 am: very busy but didn't go to work today. staying home to write that aforementioned personal statement instead.

so you know how, when toddlers walk next to their parents, their tiny legs move really fast , trying to keep up? it's kind of amusing to watch...until you realize you see yourself in that toddler...

after yesterday's specially catered holiday lunch spread, someone from employee health promotions came to do a "walking for wellness" presentation. we got free new pedometers and a chance to participate in an optional one-mile brisk walk. i jumped at the opportunity and joined a several colleagues. the health educator said that walking a mile, or 15 min. would log ~2,000 steps on our pedometers. off we went.

upon returning, we checked our pedometers and it turned out i had taken the most steps: over 4,000! i thought, "wow!", then realized it was b/c i'm 5'2 and have short strides. everyone else was at least 5'5. in an effort to keep up with my long-limbed co-workers, i had walked faster, done more steps, and ultimately gotten a more vigorous workout. AND i was at the front of the pack, no less! maybe sometimes it pays to be small.

now i understand why my old pedometer overestimated the miles i ran/walked. i started getting a false ego-boost during my workouts--marveling at my sudden ability to cover longer distances in less time. then one day, i dropped and broke that pedometer. now i'm humbled...and tempted to buy a japanese-made pedometer for better precision.
