wasted all weekend? not quite!

wasted all weekend? not quite! (weekend update #2)

i came away from yesterday morning's farmers market with a bunch of goodness that gets my culinary imagination going: apples, sweet banana peppers, bell peppers, eggplants; italian sweet basil, vine-ripe tomatoes, and butternut squash. something i always enjoy about fall is apple season, b/c you start to see varieties of apples not normally carried in grocery stores, like one of my all-time favorites, the winesap. of course, fujis are always a staple for me b/c of their crisp sweetness. but at yesterday's market, i discovered another kind of apple, called the ginger gold, which i think will be excellent for fruit plates or salads. the reason? i'll share a little secret with you: they don't turn brown after being sliced up. for reals!

unfortunately, after i got home yesterday afternoon, i got sick and ended up sleeping the rest of the day. in truth, i was so wiped out, i really needed it. but when i awoke later, the sun was already setting and i felt tremendously guilty for letting my entire saturday go to waste like that--especially such a gorgeous fall day. i ended up backing out of plans to go out last night, as well.

BUT, all was not wasted yesterday! i regained the energy to chop up some fresh basil and make some kick-ass homemade pesto sauce**. it was hard work b/c i chopped everything up meticulously by hand. (my blender broke last year and i have no food processor). but hopefully the hard work was worth it. (i haven't tried it yet, as i chilled the sauce overnight to let the seasoning set in). i also put on a baseball cap (read: "bad hair"!) and ventured out last night to pick up cold mountain on video. i never got around to seeing it when it came out, but shawn and mary (my movie buff friends, who pretty much see every flick as it comes out) recommended it.

what's on tap for today? possibly swimming or a brisk walk, reading the sunday paper and doing the crossword puzzle, watching "cold mountain", sorting through state farm insurance's settlement paperwork from july's accident (unfortunately), and definitely some pizza and beer later as a reward. it's nice to be able to get and keep food down again b/c eating is one of life's pleasures (at least for me). i just realized that wasting yesterday wasn't so bad considering i have columbus day off tomorrow!

*PS:i still promise to write about last week's magazine interview--i'm a celebrity diarist! (not).
**PPS: i will post my pesto recipe here soon!
