dude, let's go get some psychedelic nyquil tonight
i recently got carded while buying nyquil. have i mentioned this yet? right now you're probably thinking: "come on--surely you jest!"
well folks... i kid you not. it happened last week on a quick run to the store for lozenges, soup, tissues, and cold medicine (nyquil). as i stood at the checkout counter busily fumbling around in my bag for my wallet, the old lady who was ringing up my purchase at the cash reigster asked "honey, are you at least 18?".
now i hadn't been asked if i was 18, or for that matter 21, in *ages*, so at first i don't think i realized she was asking me a question. "excuse me?" i asked, blankly staring at her. the woman laughed and explained that the cash register was set to automatically ask that question and wouldn't let her proceed with any cough remedy transactions until she knew whether i was old enough to buy nyquil.
apparently it's a new thing many drugstores have started to implement b/c of the surge in teens who abuse cough syrup to get high. DXM Hbr (dextromethorphan hydrobromide), a widely used cough suppressant produces hallucinogenic or dissassociative effects at high doses, almost like PCP or LSD. children who abuse it find it appealing because it's so easy to get as an over-the-counter psychedelic drug. it's an example of a practice called pharming.
so...do i really look that young? i guess i do. most people would probably guess i'm in my early-20's and have no idea i'll actually be 30 later this spring.
