lavender & green: let them eat cake

lavender & green: let them eat cake...

i've been pretty quiet lately. that's because i'm both swamped at work, and am in the midst of a lupus/arthritis flare that has me physically struggling, exhausted, and in a lot of pain. i'm really suffering. but hopefully it's nothing my meds and acupuncture can't get under control.

so gay marriage is in the headlines lately. of course, everyone's on the edge of their seat waiting to hear what i think and where i stand on the issue, right? (yeah, right). well sorry to disappoint: i'm not here to voice my opinions. however, i am here to tell you about an interesting article i read in the washington post a very long time ago. i can't remember the title or date, but want to say it was probably when vermont first approved civil unions for same sex couples. the article had an interesting perspective because it was written about bakeries and other wedding caterers who booked orders for commitment ceremonies.

regardless of what these business-owners' political or religious beliefs are, it seems that many cake shop owners support same sex marriage for one big reason. why? the answer is simple: many bakeries project that allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry and celebrate their unions with wedding ceremonies will mean booming business. the more people get married, the more cakes they can sell. for them, it's all about the dollar signs. it's not about the lavender (or pink or whatever). the bottom line is green.

i suppose a cake is a cake. but bakeries may have to get used to topping it with two groom figurines or two brides. or maybe triangles and rainbows. come to think of it, isn't there something known as a rainbow cake? well there you go! let them eat cake and have a gay old time!
